I am a fully qualified & retired Maths teacher who has taught in a vast spectrum of schools across London. Approximately ten years ago I ran small tutoring groups (maximum 6 students) as I was convinced that the majority of students work better this way as they can relate to each other which often encourages progress and mutual understanding. There is no better way of consolidating a topic than having to communicate (teach it) to others. I now find myself in a position to start up such groups again.

From your point of view, whether you are a parent, guardian or student, this group work would only be offered after a minimum of 2 one-to-one sessions in order to ascertain suitability for a different style of study regime. There is also the added bonus of a subtle development in social and communication skills.

One of the major problems for all students is that of feeling uncomfortable and inadequate when not understanding a particular mathematical formula or equation. The idea of putting a hand up and asking for help in front of mates is usually out of the question, especially if, after a fuller explanation, they are still floundering. Unfortunately the non understanding of even a relatively small mathematical concept can put a student so far behind the rest of the class they simply give up. The major advantage of one-to-one or small group tutoring is that I am able to focus and persevere with a student’s lack of understanding. If necessary I am also willing to visit a student at home (free of charge) in order to keep them up to standard.

Each tutor group will be specific to ability, i.e. Welsh Joint Education Commetee (WJEC), Foundation or Higher Tier.

Mature students are welcome. I have had experience of graduates requiring to resit Maths GCSE in order to obtain a C grade which is a prerequisite for a PGCE course.
